The importance of buying good sunglasses

Increasingly early springs, seasons that continue into eternal summer, winters that are much drier than in other latitudes… At this time of climate change, sunglasses are no longer conceived in Spain as a mere fashion accessory, but as a basic health product. With extremely high levels of sunshine in much of Spain, many towns, especially in the south, have more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Given this situation, it is important not to underestimate the primary function of sunglasses, which is to provide guaranteed protection against ultraviolet rays. That is why it is so important to use approved models which have passed all the tests and which comply with EU regulations, as is the case with the sunglasses available from Mister Spex’s online shop.

Winter Sunglasses
While it is true that the peak of UV radiation is reached in early summer, it is no less true that sunglasses are still needed throughout the rest of the year. Various factors related to the environment and relief have a direct impact on the incidence and intensity of UV light. The higher the altitude, the greater the risk: UV radiation increases by 10% for every 1000 metres of altitude. There are also surfaces where the light reverberates particularly strongly, which can cause glare and even damage to the cornea and retina.

In sand, harmful solar radiation can be up to 20% higher than in everyday environments
In the water, the reflected ultraviolet rays increase by approximately 30%
Snow is particularly dangerous: it reverberates 90% of the sun’s rays, which is why skiers are exposed, if they do not have adequate eye protection, to an “overdose” of UV radiation that could end up leading to so-called “snow ophthalmia”, an inflammation of the cornea.
This is why sunglasses are an indispensable complement to the safe enjoyment of skiing, mountain, beach or water sports.

Types of glasses
If the frame of the sunglasses is sometimes selected solely for aesthetic reasons, practical and visual health considerations come into play in the choice of lenses. The characteristics of the lens are defined by two factors: the manufacturing material and the existing filters. Depending on the type of material, sunglass lenses are classified into organic and mineral. The most important filters are those relating to colour and UV radiation.

Organic and mineral lenses
By organic crystals we must really understand what is commonly known as plastic or, to put it more correctly, polymers that possess certain physical and optical qualities that make them particularly suitable for the function they perform. These synthetic crystals are characterised by being

Extremely light, which results in greater comfort
Very resistant: they break less than minerals
More prone to scratching
The raw material for mineral crystals is glass composed of silica and metal oxides. They weigh twice as much as organic crystals and break more easily. On the other hand, their higher refractive index gives them a finer finish. And their hardness, understood as resistance to scratching, is superior.

Both organic and mineral lenses can be polarised or photochromic. On the other hand, there is a special category within organic lenses: those made of polycarbonate plastic. This type of lens was first used in the 1980s. They are lightweight, but not fragile, and their expansion was immediate. Today they have become the most popular lenses among sunglasses designed for activities where there is a real possibility of breakage, i.e. glasses for sports or children.

Colour and ultraviolet filters
The colour filter reduces the amount of visible light reaching the eye, preventing glare problems. European standards regulate and classify the protection offered by sunglass lenses into five levels from less to more protection. Protective lenses 2 and 3 are considered suitable for medium use, while category 4 is reserved for extreme external use such as sports activities on snow.

Tip: What colour do I choose for the glass?
Yellow. It reduces haze and improves contrast. Useful in some sports such as shooting or skiing.
Brown. Maximum protection. Recommended for mountain sports.
Green. It alters the colours little. Suitable for any activity.
Grey. The least filtering. Generates little distortion, so it is the most comfortable in everyday life. Recommended for driving.
Red. Quite annoying in everyday life.
UV filters completely absorb UVA and UVB rays. Eye: not necessarily colour-filtered lenses. For example, a clear lens that corrects for ametropia (a defect in eye refraction, whether nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism), can be treated to filter out ultraviolet radiation and be colourless. Sometimes a label is visible on the glass with the number 400nm. This means that it protects us from wavelengths below 400nm.

Polarised, photochromic and mirror effect glasses
Polarised glasses have filters that eliminate annoying light reflected from certain surfaces, allowing for much clearer vision, more natural colour perception, higher contrast and reduced eye fatigue. Especially recommended for use on highly reflective surfaces such as snow, water or wet asphalt.

Photochromic glasses are dynamic glasses: they respond to the level of light in a given environment, darkening or lightening as appropriate. They are designed for outdoor use: they react to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight. They are ideal for sports activities with changing environments or where the transition between light and shade is very pronounced (think of cycling). Beyond this very characteristic function, they are very suitable for any outdoor use, as they are fully protected against UV radiation.

Mirror effect glasses have a mirroring surface treatment on the outside of the lens, which reflects most of the light and prevents it from reaching the eye. These types of glasses are recommended for high radiation environments and activities in water or snow.

The fashionable accessory
Having ensured their protective function, we should not forget that sunglasses are one of the most popular accessories when it comes to setting style in the world of fashion. Europeans have two pairs on average and Spanish people spend more than 100 euros on sunglasses every year. In our online shop you can buy models of the main brands (Ray-Ban, Oakley, Boss, Dolce&Gabbana, Polaroid, Carrera… in total more than 70) and trends: double metal bridge glasses, translucent plastic frames and thick frames, glasses with tortoiseshell, paste or acetate frames with animal print, in vintage sports style, cat eye models, hexagonal glasses and, of course, the round metal readers typical of the prevailing nerd aesthetics that celebrities of the moment wear on the covers of magazines.

Remember that most of the sunglasses available at Mister Spex are prescription. So if you suffer from any visual defect such as myopia, hyperopia or eyestrain, just give us the values of your prescription. Your glasses will be fitted by optical experts in our German workshops. The lenses are subjected to various quality treatments (hardened, anti-reflective) and, of course, have a UV protection filter.

Trends in sunglasses
Mister Spex’s wide range of fashionable sunglasses makes it easy for you to find the perfect pair of glasses in harmony with current fashion trends. This season it takes the combination of new with old and classic designs, which give us a feeling of nostalgia and provide us with a modern and fresh impulse.
